The purpose of the competition

We are on the way to mechanization of agriculture, and machines such as tractors and fruit sorting machines, which we can call robots, are introduced. To pursue the possibility that robots take part in the agriculture more deeply, we will hold a competition where robots compete on the speed of gathering tomatoes.

We pursue the development of agricultural robots by making robots which deal with tomatoes, which might seem simple, but are delicate lives. This is also a new attempt to arise interest in the environment and robot technology.

It is difficult for robots at the current stage to defeat humans in gathering tomatoes. However, we endeavor to achieve the goal that technologies which are developed through the competitions are introduced to agriculture, and that agriculture robots are developed and around us.

September 30: the deadline for registrations (Senior Division)
October : the briefing meeting for participants in Junior Division
October 30: the deadline for registrations (Junior Division)
December 8: preparation, tour (only for applicants)
December 9: training course (Junior Division), the first round・presentation (Senior Division), party
December 10: the second round, the final round

Divisions

We invite teams for the following two divisions.

  • Junior Division: high school students and below.
  • Senior Division: technical college students, undergraduates, graduate students and others.

Junior Division

The robot competition using Mind Strom

  • Participants make an autonomous robot which thinks and moves by itself.
  • The robot move along the line, identify the color of the tomatoes, and carry them.
  • The robot put the tomatoes into the shelves according to their colors.

Specifications for robots (Senior Division)

Basic Specifications

  • Size of the robot: width 800[mm] × length 800[mm] (including the box to carry tomatoes)
  • The robot has to have an emergency stop button on a place you can reach easily.

Recommended Specifications

  • Weight: less than 50[kg] (including the box to carry tomatoes)
  • Watt for each motor: less than 80[W]

The competition field (Senior Division)

The whole field

  • Free-style area
  • Tomato area
  • Rail-style area
  • The center distance of the rail is 600(±5)mm and the diameter is 50mm

FieldArea

  • The tomatoes are put 800mm to 1200mm above the floor.
  • A black plastic cardboard is put in the middle of the frame from which the tomatoes hang so that the robots identify the tomatoes easily.
  • In the first competition, the floor of the free-style area was artificial turf.
  • The floor of the free-style area in the second competition is made from six sheets of plywood (180cm × 90cm). Sheets of artificial turf are fixed on the plywood by tacker.

The first stage (One real tomato)

In the first stage, the robot moves from the starting point to front of the tomatoes, and identifies and gathers a tomato.

In the second stage, the robot moves from the starting point to front of the tomatoes, and identifies and gathers a bunch of tomatoes.

In the final stage, the robot moves from the starting point to front of the tomatoes, and identifies and gathers ripe tomatoes from bunches.

The competition contents and rules (Senior Division)

*There might be a change of the contents and the rules.

The contents of the competition

  • The robot starts from the home position.
  • The robot moves to front of the tomatoes.
  • The robot identifies the tomatoes.
  • The robot gathers the tomatoes.

The rules of the competition

  • The robot must gather a tomato one by one.
  • The competition time is 10 minutes for each team (including settings)
  • If the robot stops during the competition,

you can finish the competition and the number of the tomatoes gathered is your score
or
you can move the robot back to the starting point and restart.
(in this case, the tomatoes gathered before the restart are not counted as your score)
