What's VPN?

VPN (Virtual Private Network) is a method of constructing a virtual network between remote sites through the Internet network as if they were on the same LAN. In particular, a connection between a base and a client PC is called a remote access VPN.
Normally, access to Garoon, the university-wide groupware for faculty and staff, ftp access for www server at Wakamatsu campus, and workstations in laboratories is not possible from the Internet side due to security reasons.
By using a VPN, you can access these resources from home or on a business trip via the Internet; the VPN terminal has a virtual IP interface and provides a network environment equivalent to the campus intranet.

Precautions and restrictions on use
  • Due to incompatibility with the personal firewall of anti-virus software, VPN communication may not be possible depending on the OS environment.
  • All network access excluded the your terminal's one(local LAN) will be VPN communication. So you can access to NAS or broadband routers in the local LAN while establishing VPN connection.
  • If you want to access a host in the Laboseg network (172.16.xxx.xxx, 172.17.xxx.xxx, 172.30.xxx.xxx) via VPN, you need to make sure that the IP address used for the local LAN and the network to which the target host belongs do not overlap.
  • Since VPN connections depend on the network environment, they may not be available depending on the communication environment at your home or hotel. Especially, public WiFi network is a best-effort service (no guarantee of service quality), so the stability of communication varies depending on the service area and the number of users. Please note that we cannot support problems caused by such unique environments.
How to use
  1. The Laboseg VPN administrator in your laboratory (your supervisor in most cases) must register your Kyushu Tech ID on the Laboseg administration screen in advance. If you are using Laboseg VPN for the first time, please ask the Laboseg VPN administrator to register you.
*A Kyutech ID cannot be registered to multiple Laboseg VPNs.
  2. Download and install FortiClient VPN https://www.fortinet.com/support/product-downloads#vpn
*Be sure to install "FortiClient VPN", because the software without "VPN" in the name is a paid version and cannot be used with the our kyutech VPN service.
  3. Enter the following information in the "Create Connection Profile" field.
    • VPN: Select "SSL VPN"
    • Connection Name: Any (e.g., Wakamatsu Laboseg)
    • Remote Gateway: laboseg-w.kiban.kyutech.ac.jp
      • customize port: check on, and Enter "10443" in textbox
    • Authentication: Select "Save login"
    • Username: <<Kyutech ID>>
  4. Click the "Connect" button to start the VPN connection. Thereafter, you can connect/disconnect from the Windows taskbar or macOS menu bar icon.
